50Hertz today held the ceremonial start of construction for the Ostwind 1 offshore grid and submarine cable project in the presence of the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Erwin Sellering, and 80 guests from politics, administration, business and the media.

The project Ostwind 1 represents the submarine cable route in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) Baltic-Westlich-Adlergrund (cluster 1 in the draft network Plan) for the grid connection which will support both the Wikinger Offshore wind project (350MW) and Arkona Offshore wind project (385MW).  Both Offshore wind farm projects have the necessary approvals needed for construction and this is expected to commence at any point soon.

"The grid connection for the offshore windparks in West Adlergrund Cluster will cost more than one billion euros, the biggest investment we have made for our company, "said Boris Schucht, CEO of 50Hertz. "We are very pleased that parallel to the completion of the second connection in the German Baltic Sea, we have a third project on schedule now entering the construction phase."

Currently, in the two areas of construction of the project - Offshore and onshore (on the land route plus the nearshore area close to the beach) - the last pre-construction work is being completed, including any ordnance recovery carried out in close cooperation with the  Munitionsbergungsdienst (explosive ordnance disposal service) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Once completed, onshore the Horizontal Directional Drilling HDD can begin. These will be for a number of pipes around 400 meters from the beach linefor the shore crossing.

Offshore there are already munitions free route sections, so that the final soil investigations can now be carried out until the end of this year, then allowing a "pre lay run" to be executed by the cable ship. The "Pre-Lay-Run" is a dry run for cable laying in order to finalise the cable installation procedure subsequent installation.

All permits for construction and operation of the 93-kilometer cable route are in place.
