The submarine cable that connects the Anholt offshore wind farm to onshore grid has been repaired. The offshore turbines can once again transmit power ashore.

The cable was back in operation on Saturday night following 24 days of remedial works which began 29-Oct-15. Energinet.dk and partners replaced two sections of the 25 km export cable, the first section of 400 meters near land and Grenaa and the another section of four kilometers at the substation near Kattegat.

The risk was discovered during the investigation of an error that put the cable from operating 21-Feb-15.

Energinet.dk stated that studies subsequently revealed that the same type of error could occur in two other places of the submarine cable.

"Although some days has blown strongly, then the repair actually gone very quickly. 24 days is faster than we could believe on initially. But there's been working day and night, and fortunately we have also had days when autumn weather turned a quieter side,"
says Torben Glar Nielsen, technical director of Enerignet.dk.

The Anholt offshore wind farm is Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm with an overall capacity of 400MW and covers 4% of Denmark’s total power consumption based on CO2-free power. This is a significant contribution to meeting Denmark’s objective of ensuring that the percentage of renewable energy reaches above 35% by 2020.
Located between Djursland and the island of Anholt in the Kattegat the wind farm is comprised of 111 Siemens SWT-3.6-120 turbines. It was fully commissioned in September 2013 after the final turbine was connected to the grid in June.

It is still too early to say what the repair and other costs associated with the replacement will total.
