Iberdrola awards Areva a € 620 Million turbine contract claimed to be the largest turbine contract in the renewables sector

It will be the first time that the Iberdrola Group uses 5 megawatt wind turbines to power one of their wind farms.

The French company (Areva), will develop this project as part of the agreement with Gamesa and equip Wikinger Offshore wind farm with 70 M5000-135 wind turbines and take care of maintenance for a decade.

Located in German waters of the Baltic Sea and with a power of 350 MW, Wikinger Offshore wind farm will be the first offshore installation of IBERDROLA in Germany, and Iberdrola's second in the world after West of Duddon Sands. It will also be the fourth German marine park in using Areva turbine technology.

IBERDROLA sealed the deal with the French company Areva proving to be the largest single turbine contract awarded to date and worth around € 620 million.

Areva will provide and install the turbines for the Wikinger wind farm for € 550 million and under the agreement, Areva is also responsible for providing the service of maintaining these facilities for a minimum period of five years, renewable for a further five years, for a total of € 70 million.

According to Iberdrola it is intended that Areva will continue to develop this project within a framework agreement reached last July with Gamesa to merge their activities in the offshore wind sector.

The manufacture of the wind turbines will be from the Bremerhaven and Stade factories, and the installation of foundations will be delivered from the offshore terminal of the port of Sassnitz from 2017.

The Wikinger site is situated northeast of the island of Rügen and covers an area of approximately 34 square kilometers  where water depths vary between 37 and 43 meters. The foundations are planned to be of a lattice type.

Once operational, this new Iberdrola complex will require a total investment of 1,400 million euros, will produce enough energy to meet the electricity needs of about 350,000 German households, and lead to a further additional 00 direct and indirect jobs.

According to IBERDROLA "this is part of the Group's commitment to pioneering offshore wind. The Company opened in UK, on 30 October 2014 its first offshore park in the world: West of Duddon Sands, which will provide 389 MW renewable electricity to about 280,000 British households."

On the 19th of December 4C Offshore reported the award of a contract by Iberdrola to Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) in partnership with Volker Stevin International (VolkerWessels) for the partial construction of the Wikinger Offshore Wind Farm in the German section of the Baltic Sea. The value of that contract is approximately EUR 75 million.
