Bay State WindBay State Wind, a subsidiary of wind energy developer Ørsted and utility company Eversource, has opened a new office in New Bedford, Massachusetts to further the development of the Bay State Wind offshore wind farm.

“New Bedford is going to be the epicenter for offshore wind in Massachusetts,”
said Thomas Brostrom of Bay State Wind and its parent company, Orsted. “It has been teed up for a long time.”

The  Bay State Wind project is located 15 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard in the Atlantic Ocean. According to the developers, the site can host an array with a capacity up to 1GW. The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management issued a Site Assessment Plan (SAP) for the project in July 2017, paving the way for the deployment of FLiDAR WindSentinel system off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard to measure wave and wind speeds in the project’s lease area.

Feasibility assessments and stakeholder engagement is ongoing and is part of a three year process which includes the collection of data and the detailed assessment of the physical, biological and economic characteristics of the lease area.

Bay State Wind also committed to contribute $25,000 to the New Bedford Wind Energy Center, which is leading the city’s efforts to promote the growth of the offshore wind industry and associated economic development within the Port of New Bedford.

Further to its offshore wind interest in Massachusetts, DONG Energy also has the project rights to a site off the coast of New Jersey. The 650km2 site is located between 11-33km from shore and could support an array of up to 1GW in capacity.

To remind, in August 2016 Massachusetts formally adopted a comprehensive energy bill that includes a first-of-its-kind mandate that requires state utilities to purchase 1.6GW of offshore wind power. In June, Massachusetts utilities took their first step toward fulfilling the mandate with a request for proposals to build the state’s first project.
