On Saturday 17th of March, offshore wind set a new record for energy production according to National Grid. It generated 14.3GW of electricity for the first time – supplying more than a third of Britain’s power needs. The previous record of 13.8GW was set on 1st March.

National Grid said overall wind provided 35.7% of the nation's electricity on Saturday – while gas produced 20.3%, nuclear supplied 17.6%, coal 12.9% and imports 6%.

When the Beast from the East was at its height on 2nd March wind supplied 29.1% of British electricity, followed by coal 23.0%, gas 20.4%, nuclear 14.7% and imports of 6.3%.

RenewableUK’s Executive Director Emma Pinchbeck said: “Yet again, wind is playing a key role in keeping Britain going during a cold spell. When the mini Beast from the East struck on Saturday, over a third of the UK’s electricity was being generated by wind."

She went on to say, "We’re harnessing a reliable, home-grown source of power which reduces our dependence on imports to maintain the security of our energy supplies”.

The UK currently has over 6GW of offshore wind in operation with a further 3GW under construction. This includes Hornsea Project One which is poised to become the world’s biggest wind farm. The Ørsted owned project is anticipated to produce enough clean energy for well over one million UK homes.
