BOWLPile installation operations at the Beatrice offshore wind farm are nearing completion. As of the 2nd October, piling works have been completed at 78 of the total 86 locations. Installation of the foundation piles began during April this year.

The piles form part of the jacket foundation which will support the 84 wind turbines and two offshore transformer modules at the Scottish site. Work is being carried using Seaway Heavy Lifting's (SHL) vessel Stanislav Yudin.

To ensure that each of the four piles are installed correctly, a specially designed Pile Installation Frame (PIF) is lowered to the seabed. The PIF has hydraulic feet which allow it to sit level regardless of the undulating seabed.  At around 700 tonnes, it can take around fours hours to be put into place.

Pile foundations are delivered on barges having been manufactured at a number of facilities.  Once alongside the Stanislav Yudin, each of the four piles is lifted and transferred from the barge to the vessel. Each pile is then lifted, upended and lowered into the PIF ahead of them being installed in to the seabed by way of percussive piling.

Further to pile installed, jacket foundation installation is also underway at the site. A total of 28 jacket foundations have been installed so far and work is being carried out by another of SHL's heavy lift vessels, the Oleg Strashnov. The jacket substructures range be between 68m and 81m tall.
Jacket installation activities are expected to continue until December 2017 and then resume in May 2018 after a short break, weather permitting.

The Beatrice project is a joint venture between SSE Renewables Limited, SDIC Power of China and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. It is situated in the Outer Moray Firth off the east coast of Scotland and is expected to be operational by 2019. The project will feature 84 Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 turbines and is expected to capable of generating enough electricity to power approximately 450,000 homes.
