On Saturday 31st October, the Turbine Transfers crew transfer vessel Beaumaris Bay experienced an activated smoke alarm in one of her engine rooms whilst transiting to the Borkum Riuffgrund I wind farm from her base port of Norddeich.

The crew for performed a text book operation in dealing with such an incident, following all the correct radio procedures, mustering and keeping the passengers informed, following the Safety Management System checklists and informing the authorities. The built in Stat-X suppressant system was activated in case the smoke had been caused by a fire. Smoke was later dissipated by ventilation and the vessel reported no fire onboard.

In a press release the company stated:
"Turbine Transfers wishes to express their thanks for the professionalism and courtesy extended by the crew of the Bernhard Gruben. All passengers were safely transferred ashore once the vessel made her way alongside."

Previously thought to be a fire, on investigation it was discovered that the smoke had been caused by a failed alternator shaft.

Turbine Tranfers stated that the vessel is due back in service imminently.

In August 2013 the construction of Borkum Riffgrund 1 started with the installation of the offshore substation, which is the heart of the wind farm. With a nominal power per turbine of 4.0 MW, the 78 wind turbines will produce enough environmentally friendly electricity to supply 320,000 German households each year.
