Bladt IndustriesOne of the substation topsides for the Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm has arrived at Bladt Industries' (Bladt) Aalborg fabrication facility.

The project is poised to be the world's largest wind farm and will have three offshore substations, all to be built by Bladt.  Each substation topside will have a weight of approximately 2,800t and will measure 36m in length, 23m in width and 20m in depth. Delivery is expected during the first half of 2018.

Bladt will be responsible for fabricating the steel structures of the substation topside and long-term partner Semco Maritime will be in charge of installing the electrical systems following the design and engineering works. Semco will also be responsible offshore commissioning of each platform.

Bladt also has a contract for the delivery of 96 transition pieces for the project. A total of 56 of the transition pieces will be manufactured at the Offshore Structures Britain (OSB) facility in Haverton Hill, Teesside, UK. The remaining 40 will be manufactured at Bladt's Aalborg facility in Denmark.

When operational, the 1.2GW Hornsea Project One  is expected to provide enough energy to supply an excess of one million UK homes. The wind farm is being built 120km east of the Humber Estuary and will cover an area of approximately 407km2, which is over five times the size of the city of Hull.

The project will feature 174  Siemens' SWT-7.0-154 turbines which stand at 190m, larger than the Gherkin building in London. The turbines will be mounted on 116 monopile foundations and 58 jacket foundations.
