The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will hold a North Carolina Renewable Energy Task Force meeting on October 7. The meeting is a result of a recent environmental review which could lead to the lease sale for offshore wind in North Carolina.

The purpose of the Task Force meeting is to provide an overview of renewable energy planning efforts offshore North Carolina to new and existing Task Force members and to discuss the next steps in the renewable energy leasing process. Participation during the meeting will be limited to Task Force members only. A public question and answer session will be held upon its conclusion.

Last week BOEM completed an environmental review which found no significant environmental or socioeconomic impacts in the event of offshore leases being issued. Following this review BOEM can move forward with its process for considering a renewable energy lease sale for wind energy areas (WEA) in North Carolina.

The WEAs, which total approximately 307,590 acres, include the Kitty Hawk WEA (about 122,405 acres), the Wilmington West WEA (about 51,595 acres), and the Wilmington East WEA (about 133,590 acres).

After considering Task Force input, BOEM will publish its proposal via a “Proposed Sale Notice” in the Federal Register, which will include a 60-day public comment period.

Task Force members include Federal officials and elected state, local, and tribal officials, or designated member representatives.

The meeting will begin at 3:00 PM and will be held at Coastline Conference & Event Centre, Wilmington, NC.
