Borkum Riffgrund II delay agreed

DONG Energy requested permission to shift the expected completion date for the grid connection of Borkum Riffgrund II from the 31-Dec-2015 to 22-Jul-2018. The application was approved by the The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany (BSH) on the 29-Oct-2015.

Originally consented for the grid allocation amounting to 349.2MW DONG's original completion date was December 2017. The agreement covered the transmission of the 349.2MW to the DolWin3 converter via two 200MW HVAC cables.

Upon gaining a further 100.8MW grid allocation, raising the transmission to shore to 450MW an additional 200MW cable was planned to be installed to allow for the wind farms additional capacity. DONG called for a postponement of the expected completion date to make changes to technical concept of the wind farm.

Following this, both DONG and TenneT agreed that two cables, with a 225MW capacity, would be most beneficial to connect the wind farms substation to the DolWin3 converter. DONG has yet to issue tenders for the construction of the new grid solution and requested TenneT to delay the expected completion date for the offshore grid from 31-Dec-2017 to 22-July-2018.

The delay in the construction of the offshore grid solution is expected to delay the commissioning of the wind farm to the end of 2019.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 will be located in the North Sea, approximately 57km off the north-west coast of Germany. Generating renewable energy from its 57 V164-8.0MW  turbines and expects to cover the consumption of 460,000 German households.

DONG Energy's currently operational Borkum Riffgrund 1 offshore wind farm  was inaugurated last month. The project began with the final investment decision in 2011. In August 2013, the construction of the wind farm started with the installation of the offshore substation, which is located at the heart of the wind farm. With a nominal power per turbine of 4.0 MW, the 78 wind turbines will produce enough environmentally friendly electricity to supply 320,000 German households each year.

In total, DONG Energy has installed 3,000MW offshore wind turbines which can supply enough electricity to cover the consumption of more than 7 million Europeans. The company has a target of installing a total of 6,500MW by 2020 thus more than doubling the capacity over the next five years compared to what has been installed in the last 15 years.
