The National Office for Entrepreneurial Netherlands (RVO.nl) and BLIX have completed the survey of Borssele I and II. The investigation collected information about the soil, wind and water conditions of the site.

RVO.nl started the geotechnical survey of the site in 2014 as requested by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.  It was the first time that the Dutch government carried out such a project and therefore BLIX was engaged as a consultant.

The Borssele site I and site II will be the first under the new SDE + tender system awarded by the government. The tender is scheduled to open in early December and then commercial parties can register for one or both lots.

Earlier this week TenneT announced that it had mapped the export cable route for the Borssele wind farm zone. The cables will come ashore at Borssele, less than one kilometer from TenneT's existing 380 kV substation at Borssele. The construction of the export cable for the Borssele wind farm zone is expected to start in 2018.

Both Borssele site I and site II  are expected to reach a joint capacity of 700 MW with the Borssele wind farm zone reaching a total  capacity of 1400 MW. This could supply 1.5 million households, which is enough for all households in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The offshore wind areas of North and South Holland Coast are to be awarded in the coming years. According to the Energy Agreement, wind farms in the Dutch North Sea are set to reach a capacity of 4450 MW by 2023. Should this be achieved, one third of the electricity used by household in the Netherlands will come from offshore wind energy.
