Carsaig Bay Mainland to Lealt Bay Jura – Power Cable Installation

Mariners are advised that Briggs Marine Contractors Limited will be installing a replacement subsea power cable between Mainland and Jura as per Marine Licence number 05305/14/0 dated 28th October 2014 under the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010.

Cable installation operations are running from Sunday 30th November and due to finish today (4th December 2014).

Operations will be carried out from the vessels Forth Guardsman, Forth Jouster and Forth Fighter.

Forth Guardsman, a self propelled barge using Briggs own modular subsea cable equipment, will be the main Cable Lay Vessel (CLV), Forth Jouster will be Dive Support Vessel (DSV) and Forth Fighter with be Anchor Handling Vessel (AHV).

This configuration has been used in the past to install a replacement power cable between Mossbank and Yell. This cable forms part of SSEs distribution network around the Shetland Isles, an essential link in providing utilities to remote communities. That installation was carried out in during the winter months, operating in strong tidal conditions, poor weather conditions and restricted daylight hours. The 3.6km cable route crossed Yell Sound, an extremely challenging, high-energy area during winter months, where tidal currents were recorded up to 9 knots.

Mariners have also been advised that Briggs Marine Contractors Limited will be undertaking a marine survey using the Mersey Guardian between Mainland and Jura. The works will be carried out on the proposed submarine power cable route above Marine operations have been running from Sunday 30th November due to finish Sunday 7th December 2014. During survey operations, Mersey Guardian will be restricted in the ability to manoeuvre.

Operations are being carried out during the hours of daylight, during which the vessel will display the appropriate day shapes/signals and at times of reduced visibility the appropriate lights as required by the IRPCS. The vessel will also actively transmit an AIS signal. A continuous listening watch is being maintained on VHF Channel 16 and DSC
