Crown Estate gives the nod for Thanet Extension

Vattenfall's application for its Thanet Extension offshore wind farm has been approved by the Crown Estate. Located off the coast of Kent, the project is an extension to the existing Thanet offshore wind farm.

The Crown Estate stated that it intends to grant rights to Vattenfall for a 300MW extension to Thanet in accordance with its application.

Helen Jameson, Project Manager for Vattenfall’s Thanet Extension said: “We’re pleased that The Crown Estate intends to grant us development rights for Thanet Extension. We think the Extension will be good for UK consumers, delivering low cost renewables, and good for the local economy as a new addition to our Kent cluster of offshore projects. We’ll continue to work with TCE and other stakeholders to develop the best possible project.”

Vattenfall now seeks to obtain all statutory consents for its extension project. An application for Development Consent Order is expected for early 2018 with the Secretary of State's decision on the project to follow mid-2019. Without the Secretary of State's approval Vattenfall cannot progress with construction.

Vattenfall has been operating the existing Thanet offshore wind farm, 14km off Foreness Point, since 2010. At 300MW, with 100 wind turbines, it was in 2010 the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

In 2015 Vattenfall carried out the construction of its Kentish Flats Extension project. The 15 turbine project added a further 49.5MW capacity to the existing and operational 90MW Kentish Flats offshore wind farm.

More than 70 people are currently working at the company's operations base in Ramsgate Harbour supporting the three wind farms in the Kent Cluster: Thanet, Kentish Flats and Kentish Flats Extension.
