Van Oord (Aelous)Van Oord has signed an agreement with Damen Shiprepair at Schiedam for the upgrade of the jack-up installation vessel Aeolus. The increased capacity will enable Van Oord to continue to install increasingly larger foundations and heavier turbines at offshore wind farms.

The vessel's loading capacity, accommodation and crane capacity will all be increased. Damen will install sponsons, strengthen the deck, enlarged spud cans and add a new accommodation module with helideck.

The existing 900 tonnes crane will be replaced by a 1,600 tonnes leg encircling crane. The new crane has been ordered from Huisman, a heavy installation equipment specialist based in Schiedam/Rotterdam.

Work is scheduled to start in September 2017 with the vessel due to be operational with the new upgrades in spring 2018.

The Aeolus has been used by Van Oord in the construction of the Gemini and Luchterduinen wind farms. The company stated that after the upgrades it will be used on wind farms such as Norther and Borssele 2&3.
