Danish Energy Agency shares experience with U.S

Tuesday this week, the Danish Energy Agency, Eksportrådet – The Trade Council and the Danish Cleantech Hub co-hosted an executive forum in New York on the early stages of offshore wind development and, specifically, the importance of good planning. A Danish advocate in New York yesterday told the Americans about the Danish experiences with offshore wind farms and the Danish wind turbine industry's competencies.

The event was focused on New York and specifically on the New York State Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA's) ‘Offshore Wind Masterplan’ – which NYSERDA plans to release within the month.

New York Governor Cuomo recently established a target of up to 2.4GW of offshore wind by 2030, the largest commitment to offshore wind power in U.S. history. Subsequently the Governor is calling for a procurement of at least 800MW of offshore wind power between two solicitations to be issued in 2018 and 2019. Therefore, the US authorities are currently busy planning for the expansion of offshore wind farms and are looking for inspiration to create the right framework conditions to get competitive electricity prices from the seabed.

Even though the focus was on NY, wind development is moving ahead rapidly across the Northeast with 14 GW of offshore projects awarded to nine developers in 14 lease blocks from North Carolina to Massachusetts. With lots of new offshore wind, good planning is something which is relevant across the Northeast and will become increasingly so.

The US Department of Energy expects investment in wind turbines to reach several hundred billion dollars by 2050.

Denmark and the U.S recently signed a cooperation agreement specifically focusing on offshore wind. Under the agreement, Denmark will provide knowledge and experiences available to Americans who have ambition to establish offshore wind.

The U.S. offshore wind market is emerging with the nation’s first commercial offshore wind project, the Block Island offshore wind farm, having been operation for just over a year. Additional projects proposed along America’s coastlines with lease areas awarded to multiple companies, including Statoil, Avangrid, Deepwater Wind and Ørsted.
