Danish nearshore bids to be submitted in political storm

Three pre-qualified bidders are expected to submit their bids today for five Danish nearshore wind farms, however the Danish Wind Industry Association (DWEA) is concerned about the Governments decision as there is a great deal of political uncertainty surrounding support for nearshore wind technology.

The wind industry requires a political agreement which would pave the way for the establishment of coastal turbines which are expected to be the cheapest option in the European market, according to the interest group.

The DWEA explained that whilst most of parliament supports the implementation of offshore wind, the Government has reduced financial backing through lowering the country's energy transition ambitions. The Danish Energy Minister, Lars Christian Lilleholt, proposed changes to the Public Service Obligations levy is too high and the country's energy agreement needs adapting, this included the abandonment of the nearshore tender.

In 2015, a 350MW multi-site tender was issued by the DEA which highlighted six nearshore areas for development: Sejerø bugt, Smålandsfarvandet, Bornholm, Sæby, Vesterhav Syd and Vesterhav Nord.

Then in April 2016 the DEA rescind-ed the Sejerø bugt area from the nearshore tender due to the potential effect on a local Common Scoter duck population.

The final decision is expected in Autumn 2016. A maximum of 200MW can be applied for each site except Bornholm which has a limit of 50MW.
