DEME GroupDEME Group has placed an order for what it is calling a "next generation" offshore installation vessel. It will be built by COSCO in China and is expected to be delivered in 2019.

DEME Group subsidiary GeoSea will deploy the vessel, dubbed Orion, for the construction of large offshore wind farms. The vessel will be fitted with a crane with a lifting capacity of 3,000 tonnes at more that 50m reach and can lift component at heights of 170m.

DEME stated that the vessel will be suitable to transport the monopiles, jackets, wind turbine components and structures associated with the construction of giant multi-megawatt wind turbines.

At 216.5m long, Orion will be equipped with DP3 (Dynamic Positioning) capability and can accommodate a total of 131 people.

Luc Vandenbulcke, Managing Director GeoSea: “With ‘Orion’ we will be uniquely positioned to meet the future requirements of our customers and the trend towards larger capacity turbines and bigger wind farm projects, delivering energy at lower costs. ‘Orion’ will be capable of installing mega monopiles at greater depths. With DP3 technology the offshore installation vessel can continue operations under the most challenging conditions.”

The vessel will join DEME's fleet of over 200 vessels including jack-ups, crane vessels, dredgers and crew transfer vessels. One of the company's jack-up vessels, the Innovation is currently being used by GeoSea to install monopile foundations at the Galloper offshore wind farm, located approximately 30km off the coast of Suffolk.
