DONG Energy is preparing to dismantle of Vindeby wind farm, the worlds first wind farm, located off the coast of the Danish Island Lolland.

The project began generating power in 1991 following the kick-off of construction the previous year. Comprised of 11 Bonus B35/450 turbines, each with a 0.45MW capacity, the project has a total installed capacity of 4.95MW.

"Vindeby was the very beginning for Danish industry, which today has approximately 30,000 employees, a turnover of approximately 90 billion kr and export in the region of 60 billion kr. But after 25 years of operation is vindebymøllerne by being worn down, and therefore do we are ready to retire the park, "says Leif Winther, who is responsible for DONG Energy's Danish offshore wind farms.

Vindeby was pioneered by the then Elkraft, now part of DONG Energy, who experimented with placing turbines out in the shallow waters. Since Vindeby's birth, turbine installation offshore has become a worldwide industry and the largest offshore wind turbines now produce more power than the entire Vindeby plant.

Before the dismantling starts, DONG Energy stated that it is interested in dialogue on the application of the infrastructure is built around the park.

"There are cables with an associated substation on land, and it might be interesting for companies interested in renewable energy. We would like to dialogue with before the download starts, "added Leif Winther."In future there will be other and considerably larger offshore wind farms to be taken down. How this is done most effectively and with the highest concern for the environment is an unexplored area. Here Danish companies might gain an edge, just as they did when we started the expansion of wind power. "

Last week, DONG Energy confirmed that it has made the final investment decision for the Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm. This project will be one of the world's largest and will supply green energy to approximately one million British homes.
