IMarEST/EEEGR establish energy sector Special Interest Group

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and the East of England Energy Group (EEEGR) are establishing a regional marine Special Interest Group (SIG) specifically covering the energy sector in the East of England/Southern North Sea.

The Southern North Sea is a hugely significant region for marine energy with 153 active gas platforms 2 interconnectors, 2,300 kilometers of pipeline and, to date, 24 proposed offshore windfarms off the coast.

The SIG will seek to explore a number of topics pertaining to marine energy in the region, from the vast range of marine vessels used in the energy sector to subsea support and the challenges of cooperating with other work being done in the Southern North Sea such as that of aggregate extractors, aquaculturists and fisheries.

Dr Bev MacKenzie, IMarEST’s Technical & Policy Director commented: “This is a great initiative and both the IMarEST and EEEGR are well placed to deliver technical expertise and to facilitate discussion in this important geographical area for the benefit of the marine sector and the profession”

The SIG will be formally announced at EEEGR’s flagship event, SNS2015 on the 4th and 5th March at the Royal Norfolk Show Ground in Norwich where there will be a presentation highlighting the benefits of participation in the SIG, IMarEST’s role in the marine energy sector and the challenges and opportunities facing the industry. Dr MacKenzie will also invite delegates to join a breakout session to discuss the way forward and set the short term objectives.

Dr MacKenzie added: “With such a diverse topic, we need a strong steering group made up of representatives from energy companies, vessel operators, ports, marine supply chain and associated businesses and other organisations.”

Those wishing to get involved and contribute their expertise are able to nominate candidates to be considered to form a steering group to develop terms of reference and to ensure the SIG meets the needs of industry, society and the wider marine profession.

Any parties wising to enter a nomination to join the steering group should complete the nomination form here and to book a place at the conference click here http://www.eeegr.com/events/sns2015-1287.html or for further information call 01493 446535.
