Earlier this week, Energinet.dk's board adopted the budget for 2016. They stated that the budget reflects the investments Energinet.dk make in the future security of supply and the transition to renewable energy.

The largest investments are feasibility studies and grid connection of the two future offshore wind farms Horns Rev 3 in the North Sea and Kriegers Flak in the Baltic Sea as well as a new 700 MW electricity interconnector between Denmark and the Netherlands.

As well as investing, Energinet.dk has plans to set up a new retail market to promote competition in the electricity market. The company stated that the rise in price will ensure that consumers continue to have the same level of security of energy supply.

Energinet.dk said that the grid tariff prices will increase primarily due to the cost of the feasibility study for the offshore wind farms. Energinet.dk can not recover the costs of the project should it be deemed not viable, therefore the increased tariff prices will enable them to cover their losses should the project be rejected.

A total of six areas designated for possible coastal wind farms, but it is only expected that two of the areas can come to house coastal parks.

The Board has decided to raise Energinet.dk's grid tariff of 4.2 cents / kWh in 2015 to 4.3 cents / kWh in 2016 and to raise Energinet.dk's System Tariff from 2.9 cents / kWh in 2015 to 3.9 cents / kWh in 2016.

Chairman Niels Fog said:
"We are in a time of major investments in the green transition. It is simultaneously a time of very low electricity market prices, and where to obtain the necessary capacity elsewhere.".

The increase follows- the low electricity spot which has led some plants to lose business basis. Energinet.dk expects that it will be necessary to purchase more system services and pay for more "coercive runs".
