ENGIE steps up renewable game

ENGIE which was previously known as GDF, is setting out to double its renewable energy involvement within France by 2016

After 2050, fossil fuels will no longer be sufficient to meet global energy demand, which is expected to double. That is why renewables have been a very important area of development for the Group for several years already, with the aim of increasing their contribution year-on-year.

ENGIE produces a sufficient amount of non-nuclear power, and around 50% of its electricity generation in France is from renewable sources, including wind power, marine energy, solar and biomass. With an installed capacity of 1000 MW, which is expected to double next year (2016), ENGIE are strongly involved with onshore wind power not only in France, but also in Belgium and Italy. The Group are also involved with the solar power in France, with a total gross installed generating capacity of 383 MW, and is the country's second-largest generator of hydropower.

The Group has no hesitation in investing in all renewable energy streams, devotes significant resources to research programs to identify new sources of renewable energy, and is committed to playing its part in developing the industry sectors of the future in offshore wind power, hydrokinetics, biomethane, solar, microalgae and concentrated solar power.

Back in April 2012, The European Consortium led by the EDF Group won the French offshore wind energy call for tenders for the Saint-Nazaire, Courseulles-surMer and Fécamp projects. These projects have submitted their consent applications and it is likely this will be decided towards the end of 2015. There are currently only 4 test sites that have consent authorised in France.
