Estonia could see offshore wind happen by 2022

The project, estimated to cover 100km², will be located 10 to 27km from the western coast of Saaremaa, a small Estonian island. The turbines will be spaced at distances ranging between 800-1,100m from each other according to a building rights application that has been filed with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications.

Power generated from the wind farm will be brought ashore via a subsea export cable. The power will then be intergrated into the Estonian electricity grid by a substation which is due to be located in the Town of Sindi.

The estimating building costs for the wind farm sits at 1.7 billion euros and the project could begin producing power as early as 2022, however this is dependant on positive government action and suitable finance being put into place.

Currently Estonia has no offshore wind projects constructed, however there is over 3GW of developments in the early planning and concept phase. This includes the five zones identified by Baltic Blue Energy OÜ which will be located between Saaremaa and Hiiumaa islands. The application for these projects has been submitted to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications and covers the installation of 388 turbines with a a total capacity of 2716, however the actual plan would see the installation of 1999MW.
