More than nine out of ten people in the European Union (93%) believe that fighting climate change will only be effective if all countries of the world act together.

The results were collected through to a special Eurobarometer opinion poll on climate change which was published yesterday by the European Commission.

91% of Europeans say it is important that their government sets targets to increase the amount of renewable energy used by 2030.

Citizens also believe that action on climate change has many additional benefits. For example, 81% think that fighting climate change and using energy more efficiently could boost the European economy and create jobs, while 65% agree that reducing fossil fuel imports would be good for the economy and for Europe’s energy security.

The poll also showed that 92% think it is important that their government provides support for improving energy efficiency by 2030, with more than 52% saying it is “very important”.

With just days to go until the start of the landmark climate summit in Paris, the survey shows that climate change remains a key concern for the European public, with 91% considering it a serious problem.
