Law firm Eversheds has successfully advised the Forewind consortium on the second phase of Dogger Bank Teesside A & B offshore wind farm – making it one of the largest energy projects to receive planning consent in the UK.

Dogger Bank Teesside A & B is located off the north east coast in the North Sea. It will include up to 400 wind turbines across two offshore wind generating stations, each with an installed capacity of up to 1.2 gigawatts. The project is being developed by the Forewind consortium, a joint venture formed by RWE, SSE, Statkraft and Statoil.

Eversheds also successfully advised the consortium on an offshore wind energy project at Dogger Bank Creyke Beck. The two projects are expected to generate 16,820GWh (gigawatt hours) which is almost 5% of the total UK electricity generation supplied to the grid, enough energy to power approximately four million homes.

Eversheds provided ground-breaking technical work and analysis at an environment and policy level, particularly in relation to the offshore elements. The firm’s parliamentary agents developed innovative solutions to the structuring of the consent documentation which resulted in the consenting of two major projects in a single order incorporating flexible marine licences which will enable the project to be constructed without the need for further consents. This gave Forewind a deliverable development vital to the UK achieving its renewable energy generation targets and creating a secure energy supply.

The Eversheds team was led by partner Paul Maile working alongside partners James Trafford, Marcus Trinick and Stephen Collings.

Paul Maile said:

“As leading experts in the sector, we are pleased to have added to our previous successes by securing planning for Dogger Bank Teesside A & B. We have now consented the two largest offshore wind farms in the world, and over the course of these projects we have focussed on achieving not just a consent, but ones that deliver on Forewind’s commercial objectives.

“The project at Teesside will create more commercial activity for the UK economy and jobs for the local community. It is a significant commitment by the consortium and will make a major contribution towards the UK government’s target for renewable energy generation.”
