EWE and Trianel have formed a joint venture in order to develop and move forward with the second phase of the 200 MW Trianel Borkum offshore wind farm.

"Our partnership will benefit from different experiences,"
says Ines Kolmsee, Chief Operating Officer of EWE

Phase One Trianel Wind Farm Borkum is located 45 kilometers off the coast of Borkum consisting of 40 AREVA Wind M5000-116 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 200 megawatts (MW). With the final turbine installed in mid July, phase one was officially put into operation at the beginning of September.

EWE and Trianel agreed upon an additional 200MW capacity for the second phase of the Trianel wind farm Borkum. During the first phase, Trianel planned further development to 400 MW, the joint venture is an important step for achieving this. Trianel also received a licence from the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), furthermore the projects substation is in place.
"The joint venture with EWE creates the basis for the planned construction decision in the next year,"

said Sven Becker, CEO of Trianel GmbH. "With EWE we have found an experienced offshore partner who knows the specific investment requirements of municipal utilities," Becker added.

EWE and Trianel will bring the project together for construction. EWE initially holds a 40 percent stake in the project development. In 2016 in will be determined if EWE will also be involved in the investment for the concrete implementation of the park.

“Trianel has put us in a fantastic starting position with its preliminary work. With our joint venture concerning the Trianel wind farm Borkum II, we will pool our strengths and ensure the second expansion stage is successful as well,”
said Ines Kolmsee.

The Trianel wind farm Borkum phase one will generate roughly 800 gigawatt hours of electricity (800 million kWh) per year. This is enough electricity to supply 200,000 households. 33 municipal utilities and regional suppliers from Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland, as well as the Aachen-based cooperation of municipal utilities Trianel invested around one billion euros to complete phase one.

A total investment of 800 million euros is required for phase two,  “After the decision to build during the next year, we expect building to begin in 2017,” stated Becker.
