First Hywind turbine arrives off Scotland
Statoil (Eva Sleire)The first of the five Siemens SWT-6.0-154 wind turbines for the Hywind Scotland pilot park has arrived off the coast of Scotland after in left Stord, Norway on 18th July.

The turbine is 253m tall, weighs approximately 12,000 tonnes, with a rotor diameter of 154m. The remaining turbines will also be towed across the North Sea the the project site. Towing is being executed using Solstad Shipping's anchor handling tug supply vessels Normand Rangerand Normand Drott.

All five turbines were assembled outside Stord, Norway this summer using heavy lift vessel Saipem 7000. Upon arrival the work to install anchor lines and perform hook-up, an operation that takes 2-3 days for each turbine, will begin immediately. Turbine installation is scheduled to be finished by end of August.

Hywind consists of a turbine placed on top of a ballasted steel cylinder. The floating turbine unit is fastened to the seabed by three mooring lines.

The project is being developed by Statoil which aims to demonstrate the feasibility of future commercial floating offshore wind farms in deepwater sites with optimal wind conditions. The array will cover an area of about 4.2km² and is expected to provide renewable energy to 20,000 households annually.
