French Technocampus Ocean opening this week

Technocampus Ocean will open its doors for the first time on the 15 October. This joint platform for research dedicated to technological innovation in shipbuilding and the marine renewable energies will host numerous players in the field and boost collaborative R&D projects.

17 000 m² of space and shared resources dedicated to the maritime sector. Technocampus Ocean is a significant new platform for innovation which will host 350 researchers in a brand new building in the Nantes suburb of Bougenais.

The construction of the building and the state-of-the-art equipment represent a total investment of €47m. The project has been overseen by the Regional Agency – Pays de la Loire Territoires d’Innovation on behalf of the Region, the principal financer, generating 27,700 hours of work for the previously long-term unemployed along the way.

From the moment of opening the platform will host teams from Alstom, DCNS, STX, ACB, Dassault Systemes, and Hydrocéan, as well as researchers from CEA Tech, the École Centrale de Nantes, theÉcole nationale supérieure maritime, Jules Verne IRT, and ICAM and representatives of the EMC2 competitivity cluster.

Technocampus Ocean is equipped to play a central role in the economic development of the region and reinforce the strength of the Pays de la Loire in the maritime industries, at which the region already excels. The equipment, personnel and shared services will allow the hosted teams to conduct fundamental research in early phase (pre-production) topics in a spirit of exchange and open innovation.

The research projects will work on technological challenges in domains such as marine metal structures, manufacturing, metallurgy, assembly procedures, welding, and the use of virtual reality.
