Full power at Kentish Flats Extension

Over the weekend, all 15 of the Kentish Flats Extension's (KFE) turbines have generated power and transferred it to the national grid. The final turbine was 'switched on' 12 September and, according to Vattenfall, almost reached maximum installed capacity.

Prior to this, first power at the KFE was generated on Saturday 29 August at 14:05 from turbine number KE02.

Now that the KFE has full power Vattenfall will now carry out a series of tests on the new turbines for a set period of time. Following this they will hand the turbines over to the selected operations and maintenance team.

Now that construction is complete and the turbines are generating power, the BoDo Installer has departed the site.  The vessel was responsible for installing export cables, using it's beaching capabilities the vessel landed on the mud at low tide.  She set sail for Germany mid-afternoon of the 12 September.

Matthew Green, Vattenfall’s Project Manager for KFE said:
“It’s a little over two weeks since we generated power and exported to the grid from the very first turbine; now all 15 MHI Vestas turbines are generating low carbon power. To achieve full power so quickly and to do it safely is a strong performance from all of the technicians and engineers involved.”

The offshore construction of KFE started in May this year 8km off Herne Bay and Whitstable on the Kent coast. The project is on course for completion in the autumn. Over a twelve month period KFE is expected to generate enough power to meet the annual electricity demand of around 35,000 UK households. The project has a maximum capacity of 49.5MW, this is generated from 15 V1236-3.3 Vestas offshore wind turbines. The project is an extension of the existing 90MW Kentish Flats offshore wind farm.

In the UK, Vattenfall operates 540MW of offshore wind capacity from three sites and has more than 3.6GW of potential capacity in its UK offshore pipeline. Vattenfall also develops, builds and operates onshore wind across the UK, including the 76 turbine, 228MW Pen y Cymoedd project in south Wales and the 56MW Ray wind farm in Northumberland, both under construction.
