German grid blown away

Transmission operator (TSO) TenneT announced that on Wednesday 18-Nov-15 the wind feed from both onshore and offshore in Germany reached a new record level of 32.6GW.

The highest offshore wind supply in the North Sea  during this period was around 2,600 megawatts. A high wind feed is expected in Germany for today and tomorrow.

The extremely high wind feed on- and offshore lead to "transport bottlenecks" therefore TenneT had to implement extensive measures to keep the high voltage grid stable. Since 09-Nov Germany's TSO's have had to reduce the daily wind transmission capacity to 200MW from 300MW, furthermore 2.2GW of the German winter reserve has been engaged to stabilise the grid.

"In order for the increasing amounts of wind and other renewable energy  that can be fed and transported without interference , the expansion of the electricity grid in Germany is indispensable "said Urban Keussen, CEO of TenneT TSO GmbH.  "When the network expansion is delayed, consumers and business will continue paying higher costs for emergency response, and the risks to security of supply will increase."

TenneT stated that the Last resort is the down-regulation of wind capacity in the North to avoid transport bottlenecks in heavily loaded transmission system. Here TenneT has governed up to around 300 megawatts daily directly in the past few days.

The intervention in the renewable generation are emergency measures. They are not suitable to secure supplies in the long term says TenneT. The transmission operator continued to state that the measures generate substantial costs, which are passed on to the electricity consumers. TenneT stated that these costs in 2015 amounted to an estimated nearly 500 million euros.
