Transmission system operator TenneT has reported that offshore wind farms in the German North sea Baltic Sea generated 12.09 TWh of electricity during 2016, a 45.7% increase compare to the 8.3TWh generated during 2015.

Wind farms in the North Sea generated 10.83TWh, surpassing 2015's 7.25TWH, and accounted for 13.9 per cent of the total German wind power generation in 2016. Wind farms in the Baltic generated 1.26TWh.

Overall, TenneT now has nine connection systems with a total capacity of 5,221MW for the transmission of offshore wind energy on the grid.

Three other connection systems will be completed by the end of 2019, so that the transmission capacity in the North Sea will be 7,132MW. By 2025 TenneT plans to have implemented a further four connections increasing the offshore grid connection capacity to over 10,000 megawatts by then.
