Makai Ocean EngineeringMakai Ocean Engineering's cable deployment control software MakaiLay has been installed aboard Prysmian's cable laying vessel Giulio Verne.

MakaiLay calculates the shape of the cable in the water column and the condition of the cable near the touchdown point and displays this information in real-time. To accomplish this, MakaiLay integrates data from all the typical instruments available on a vessel, such as navigation (GPS, Gyro), cable data (tension, cable counter & length), currents (ADCP), and bathymetry.

This information, together with a 3D dynamic model of the cable provides information to the installers to properly install the cable along the route with the proper tensions.

Dr. Jose Andres, President Makai Ocean Engineering, Inc. commented: “We have added specific tools to satisfy the unique demands of power cable installations and we will continue to enhance the software as we receive feedback from our installation partners.”

The DP2 equipped  Giulio Verneis designed for the installation subsea cables. It is expected that MakaiLay with its power-cable-specific module will be used by the vessel when it starts working on the North Sea Link installation.

National Grid North Sea Link Ltd, a National Grid subsidiary, and Statnett are working together to construct the subsea interconnector, when constructed this will consist of approximately 720km High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable. The developers plan for the link to be operational in 2021 connecting Kvilldal in Norway and Blyth in the UK.

With a planned capacity of 1,400MW, the North Sea Link interconnector will be able to transport enough electricity to power nearly 750,000 homes helping both countries to meet their domestic energy demand.
