Greenwire Transmission Pembroke Limited - Electricity Interconnector Licence granted

NOTICE UNDER SECTION 6A(5) OF THE ELECTRICITY ACT 1989 OF THE GRANT OF AN ELECTRICITY INTERCONNECTOR  LICENCE
Pursuant to section 6A(5) of the Electricity Act 1989 (“the Act”), the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (“the Authority”) hereby gives notice that on 9 February 2015, an electricity interconnector licence was granted under section 6(1)(e) of the Act to Greenwire Transmission Pembroke Limited (company number 536954) whose registered office is situated at Unit C, Building 4200, Cork Airport Business Park, Cork, Ireland, authorising it to participate in the operation of the IFA 2 interconnector, an electricity interconnector between Great Britain (Pembroke substation, Wales) and Ireland (Great Island substation, Wexford).

The Greenwire project being developed by Element Power was originally a proposed development of up to 40 wind farm clusters with up to 750 turbines spread across the five counties of Kildare, Laois, Meath, Offaly and Westmeath in the Republic of Ireland.  The project ambition is to add 12,000 megawatts of renewable energy and exporting this to Britain by 2020. It is seen as supporting Irish Government policy to export renewable energy to the UK following on from the signing of Memorandum of understanding by Minister Pat Rabbitte and his British counterpart Ed Davey back in January 2013 to facilitate the trading of energy between both jurisdictions.

Greenwire intends to sign contracts with UK National Grid to supply up to 3,000 megawatts by 2018, with zero cost to Irish taxpayer,  and claiming to support up to 10,000 jobs during three year construction phase of the 3GW project, which will hopefully lead to 3,000 medium-term jobs.

Element Power is a global renewable energy developer that develops, acquires, builds, owns and operates a portfolio of wind and solar power generation facilities worldwide. The company is active in 16 countries, with more than 9,280MW of projects in development and a number of operating assets already sold.

With offices in Tullamore and Cork, Element Power Ireland conducts the Group's regional operations and presence in the Republic of Ireland and is directly responsible for the rollout of Greenwire.

IN charge since its establishment in 2010 is Tim Cowhig, supported by Peter Harte and Kevin O'Donovan who together successfully sold SWS, then one of the largest wind generating firms in Ireland, to Bord Gáis for €500 million.

All the onshore cabling is planned for underground installation, with an infrastructure independent of Irish grid.
