After making the preparations to deliver manpower, tools and safety equipment for the Block Island Wind Farm project, Global Wind Service (GWS) has announced that it is now starting up the project.

GWS were awarded the contract for lift supervision and installation of the GE Renewable Energy’s Haliade 150-6MW nacelles late last year.

“We are very proud to be a part of bringing offshore wind to the U.S. and we see great future opportunities for their growing offshore wind industry,” said Chief Commercial Officer Michael Olsen.

“We have worked with the Haliade turbine on a number of occasions, firstly at the Belwind test site and more recently the test turbine at Østerild. Our technicians will use this experience to perform the installation safely and efficiently.”

Deepwater Wind completed its first construction season for the project in December 2015 with the installation of all five foundations. The Block Island site is located 4.5km off the coast of Rhode Island. The project is expected to be fully commissioned by autumn 2016.

National Grid recently completed the installation of the 20-mile undersea cable between the Rhode Island mainland and Block Island.
