More than half of the turbines at Trianel Borkum offshore wind farm were connected up yesterday, the project has been producing power since February, the connection was made back in December. There are a remainder of 20 turbines left to connect up, these will be connected during the summer, providing weather is suitable.

The offshore wind farm, which consists of 40 wind turbines, is located approximately 45 kilometres off the coast of the island of Borkum in the North Sea. Construction of the wind farm was completed in mid 2014. Owing to repeated delays in connecting to the power grid by the transmission system operator, connection to the grid was pushed back to the start of the year.

The 40 wind turbines will now be connected in collaboration with the manufacturer Areva Wind. By spring, all AREVA Wind M5000 turbines with a 5 MW output are due to have been progressively connected.

The Norwegian multi-purpose vessel AKER WAYFARER was chartered to connect the various turbines.

"We hope that the weather will cooperate and allow us to complete the connections soon, in order that we can initiate regular operations after a successful test operation in summer,"
says Horstick. Klaus Horstick, Managing Director of Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum GmbH & Co. KG.
