Heerema Marine ContractorsDockwise, a wholly-owned Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. subsidiary, has completed loading Heerema Marine Contractors' (HMC) heavy lift semi-submersible crane vessel Hermod aboard transportation vessel Dockwise Vanguard.

The vessel was loaded out in the port of Rotterdam and it is currently being prepped for its final journey to Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard, China where it we be dismantled and recycled.  About 98% of the vessel materials will be recycled and re-used.

The load-out was completed using a float-on operation in which the transportation vessel is submerged and the cargo vessel manoeuvred in position before being lifted out of the water as the transportation vessel de-ballasts.

Designed and constructed in the 1970’s, Hermod and her sister vessel Balder were the first semi-submersible crane vessels of its kind in the offshore construction industry. The semi-submersible concept was developed with the aim to extend the operability in the harsh North Sea environment and furthermore to deliver high levels of lifting capacity, up to 8000t.

The vessel has been used in the construction of offshore wind farms, lifting heavy components such as jacket foundations and substation topsides. Its last wind farm project was the installation of the jacket foundation for offshore substation to be located the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm.

While Hermod will be retiring from service, HMC is awaiting delivery of the world’s largest semi-submersible crane vessel Sleipnir in Singapore. Sleipnir has a 2 x 10,000t lifting capacity and is due to come into service in 2019.
