HFG set to build Belgium MOG offshore platform

Belgium’s Transmission System Operator Elia has awarded to Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG) a contract for the fabrication of an Offshore Switch Yard (OSY) platform for the Modular Offshore Grid (MOG) project.

The OSY platform will be located 40km off the coast of Zeebrugge and will connect four planned offshore wind farms to the Belgium onshore grid.

With construction due to start this month HFG's contract scope includes procurement, fabrication, offshore hook-up and commissioning of the OSY platform. The topside will be fabricated in HFG’s Zwijndrecht yard, with jacket fabrication taking place in HFG’s specialized jacket yard in Vlissingen.

Koos-Jan van Brouwershaven, CEO of HFG states: “We are very pleased with this award from Elia, which came after a very comprehensive and competitive tender process. We are looking forward to contributing to Elia’s innovative offshore grid development. For HFG this contract represents another important addition to our offshore wind portfolio.”

Seaway Heavy Lifting (SHL) also recently won the tender to install the 2,100 ton topside and 1,400 ton jacket. The jacket will be installed in November 2018 and the topside will be installed in March 2019.

The Rentel, Northwester 2, Mermaid and Seastar offshore wind farms will be able to connect to the Belgian national grid via the MOG from 2019. The total installed capacity of the four wind farms is expected to total 1030MW.
