Iberdrola has confirmed that it will develop the Windanker (250MW) and Wikinger Süd (85MW) offshore wind farms alongside each other and will enter them into the upcoming German capacity auction.

Iberdrola plans to have reached Financial Close by 2021 with construction kicking off by 2023 in time for operation in 2025. Consent applications have been submitted for both projects and they are both located in the German Economic Exclusive Zone of the Baltic Sea.

A total of 3.1GW in capacity is up for grabs in the German capacity auctions. Two rounds will be held and each will offer 1550MW in grid connection capacity.

The first call for tenders will take place on 1st  April 2017 and will apply to projects which are put into operation after 31st December 2020. All offshore wind projects which were approved before August 2016 or have an advanced approval permit may participate in the tender. Further requirements concern the location of offshore wind parks within the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The second tender for offshore wind turbines will take place on 1st April 2018.

The bids must be submitted in writing to the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) by 3rd April.

The BSH has published a list of 31 offshore wind projects which meet the pre-requisites to be considered in the capacity tender rounds. Although 31 projects were listed, the BSH stated that the list is merely informative and does not state which projects are allowed to participate in the tenders round. A total of 21 of the projects are located in the North Sea with the remainder situated in the Baltic.

Winning candidates will be awarded with an offshore grid connection and subsidy valued according to the their bid. The offshore construction schedule will be dependant on the connection availability, which in turn will depend on progress and allocation constraints of the grid expansion.
