IdeolIdeol is celebrating the inauguration of its Floatgen floating wind turbine at Nantes Port in Saint-Nazaire today (13th October).

Floatgen aims to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of floating turbines in deep waters. It features a 2MW Vestas turbine on a ring-shaped concrete floating platform designed Ideol and built by Bouygues Travaux Publics. The shape means that water movement within the central opening counteracts the motion of the floater caused by wave swell and stabilises the structure.

The turbine will be deployed 12 miles off the coast of Croisic at the École Centrale de Nantes SEM-REV demonstration site. Commissioning is expected in early 2018.

Construction work began in June 2016 after the go-ahead was officially given by the European partners behind the project. The foundation was launched from the quayside in Saint-Nazaire in August.
