Jan de Nul has installed the transition piece associated with the offshore substation for the Nobelwind project off the coast of Belgium. The work was carried out by the company's jack-up installation vessel Vole au Vent .

With the transition piece now in place, developers stated it is ready to execute the installation of the topside structure which is being fabricated by Bladt Industries.

Jan De Nul was selected as EPCI contractor for the project in September 2015 and is responsible for the installation of the project's 50 3.3MW MHI Vestas wind turbines, associated foundations and offshore substation.

The Vole au Vent will be used to install the foundations and turbines. It measures 140m long and is equipped with an Liebherr crane on the deck capable of lifting 1,400t. Jan De Nul Group acquired the vessel in September last year and recently held a naming ceremony in which the vessel was renamed Vole au Vent from Vidar.

The Nobelwind project is owned by a consortium comprised of the Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo and the Dutch investors Meewind and Parkwind. The project will have an installed capacity of 165MW and is expected to meet the energy demands of 186,000 Belgian families annually.
