Jens Skibsted Nielsen,  Commercial Director of Associated British Ports (ABP), gave a speech at the closing of Offshore wind week held at the Orbis Energy Centre (the home of 4C Offshore) in which  he announced a number of contract awards to the Port of Lowestoft and its significance to the UK Offshore Wind Sector.

After various announcements it was established that the Port of Lowestoft is now not only the operations centre for the Greater Gabbard Wind farm but shall become the operations centre for the Galloper Offshore Wind farm and the base for East Anglia One. It will also be the centre for construction for the Galloper Wind farm project with foundations being fabricated from the OGN yard within the Port of Lowestoft Area. This follows on from the construction work already being carried out at the SLP Sembmarine yard for the Dudgeon Offshore wind project fabricating and constructing the Substation.

Jens stated:
"These agreements recognise the natural advantages of Lowestoft that SSE previously recognised for the Greater Gabbard control centre. Put all this together with recent developments for Windcat and Lowestofts status as the operations centre the you have a powerful picture of the port emerging as a renewable energy cluster of genuine National Significance. There is huge potential for further growth with East Anglia Array just of the coast here.  Lowestoft is now set to become the subject of extensive investment as part of the drive to secure the rights of generating capacity for the UK".

As announced by Peter Aldous MP, Lowestoft is also going to be the construction base for East Anglia One.

Jens has more than 30 years’ experience of Europe’s marine, transport and logistics industries.  Prior to joining ABP, Jens worked for Blue Water Shipping for 12 years before joining DFDS where he was variously UK & Ireland Managing Director of DFDS Transport; Managing Director of DFDS Seaways; and, latterly, Vice President of Freight Sales Solutions.
