Mammoet avoids dredging of Danish seabed

Mammoet has completed the installation of four 7MW wind turbines at the Nissum Bredning near shore wind farm in Denmark.

Conventional offshore wind power projects are generally installed using specialist installation vessels in waters up to 30m deep. At the Nissum Bredning site, in the Bay of Thyborøn these specialist vessels are unable to be used due to shallow water depths of only 3m. The conventional approach would have made dredging imperative.

Unable to access shallow waters with conventional methods, Mammoet claims it's solution simplified the process saving time and money.

Mammoet proposed a barge with an integrated ballasting system which allowed it to be lowered and grounded onto the seabed. According to Mammoet this provided the necessary stability for the operation while eliminating the need for dredging. The solution resembled an onshore installation and allegedly simplified matters, as now the lift could be performed with the land-based LR11350 crane which is used primarily for onshore wind power projects.

The Nissum Bredning project is owned by Nissum Bredning Vindmøllerlaug I / S (55%) and local energy company Jysk Energi A / S (45%). It is being financially backed by the Danish Ministry of Energy.

The wind farm features four Siemens Gamesa SWT-7.0-154 turbines which are of a slender tower concept and are designed to offer material savings. The turbines will sit on specially designed gravity-jacket foundations constructed by Navantia and Windar Renovables and will be connected via 66kV array cabling.
