EMS Maritime Offshore GmbHFrom March 2018, EMS Maritime Offshore GmbH (EMO) will provide port facilities in Emden and logistics services to wind turbine manufacturer MHI Vestas for the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind farm.

After the installation of the 56 V164-8.0 MW wind turbines, MHI Vestas will begin commissioning from a service base at Port Knock at the river Ems. The company will be operating from the site for approximately one year.

As the operator of the terminal facilities and the surrounding area, EMO offers a logistics service consisting of loading, warehousing, terminal logistics and berth management.

It also offers Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV) servicing for the transfer of technicians and the loading of goods, spare parts and equipment. The corresponding handling equipment provides EMO permanently.

Stephan Kremers, Commissioning Project Manager of MHI Vestas Offshore, commented: "EMO convinced us with their flexibility and availability of Locations around the river Ems delta, but in particular with the high independence of the location, 1st class services 24/7, as well as the versatility of Port Knock. We are looking forward to the cooperation with our new business partners."

The recently modernised Port Knock is a connected industrial area, which is located in front of the Emden harbor in Rysumer Nacken. The area offers potential for development, which will be used extensively for the first time for an offshore wind project.

Borkum Riffgrund 2 is owned by Ørsted and Global Infrastructure Partners and is expected to be fully commissioned by the end of 2019. The wind turbine array will be one of the largest in Germany with a capacity of 450MW. It is expected to supply electricity to up to 460,000 households per year.

The project will feature 36 monopile foundations and 20 jacket foundations featuring suction bucket technology. Installation of the monopile foundations is underway with installation of the jackets to follow in the coming weeks.
