Aske BlondeOn Friday evening (4th August) a test version of the MHI Vestas V164 turbine at the Danish test centre in Østerild caught fire. Nobody was injured in the fire and it has died out.

The cause is currently unknown however MHI Vestas, 50/50 joint venture between Vestas Wind Systems and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has begun an investigation into the matter.

"Regarding the incident at the Østerild prototype, we are grateful that no one was injured. The fire brigade was called immediately and secured the area around the turbine. The cause of the fire is now being investigated. We do know that the prototype was being started up, and therefore not in operation, at the time of the incident. This will not affect our construction and installation timetables," a spokesperson for the company stated.

According to MHI Vestas, the V164 platform can reach a capacity of 9.5MW, subject to specific site conditions. With the increased energy production, the company claims it will add greater value for many projects and save on Capital Expenditure costs as fewer machines will be needed to meet the park capacity.

The 8MW version of the V164 platform is currently in use at the 258MW Burbo Bank Extension wind farm off the coast of the UK.
