Minesto move gravity base structure to Holyhead

MinestoThe gravity base structure (GBS) which will be used for Minesto’s first tidal energy installation in the Holyhead Deep, Wales have arrived at Holyhead ready for installation.

The GBS, manufactured by Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, was towed up the River Mersey from the dry dock in Birkenhead, Liverpool and along the coast of North Wales to get to Holyhead. The next step is to fit cable chutes before installation commences offshore.

Holyhead Deep was identified as an ideal location for demonstrating the Deep Green tidal technology on a commercial-scale. The area provides low-flow tidal velocities (1.5–2m/s mean peak flow) at a depth of 80–100m and is only 8 km from Minesto's UK head offices in Holyhead.

Minesto was awarded an Agreement for Lease by The Crown Estate for a 10 MW installation in Holyhead Deep in June 2014. Then in April 2017, the company was consented a Marine License for the Deep Green demonstrator (DG500) installation in the Holyhead Deep.

The tidal array will be built in phases with the first 0.5MW DG500 demonstrator to be commissioned in 2018 and ambition to install further Deep Green devices. Minesto's long-term plan is to expand the Holyhead Deep site to a commercial tidal energy array with a total installed capacity of up to 80MW. The purpose of this first installation is to prove functionality and power production performance at a commercial scale.
