NavacelSpanish manufacturer Navacel loaded out a second set of towers for Statoil's floating Hywind project which is to be installed 25km off the coast of Peterhead, Scotland. The first shipment of turbines was carried out earlier this month.

The towers are being transported from Navacel's facility in the Port of Bilbao to the assembly area in Stord, Norway. The towers have a height of 83m and a diameter of 7.5m at the base and 4.2m at the top where the nacelle will be fitted. The towers weigh approximately 562.5 tonnes and will be assembled at the Stord base before being floated out to the Hywind project site later this month.

The turbines will be installed on floating foundations operating in water depths between 90 and 120m. Assembly, expected to take place on the West Coast of Norway, is scheduled for first half 2017.

The €200m project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of future commercial floating offshore wind farms in deepwater sites with optimal wind conditions. The array will cover an area of about 4.2km² and is expected to provide renewable energy to 20,000 households annually.
