NavantiaNavantia has cut steel at its Puerto Real shipyard for the offshore substation at Iberdola's East Anglia One offshore wind farm. The work is being carried out as part of €65m contract the two companies signed in October 2016.

The scope of the contract includes the construction of a top side module and its jacket foundation, both to be fabricated in the Puerto Real shipyard, as well as the provision of offshore support for connection and commissioning of the platform in the North Sea.

Navantia explained that the work will sustain on average 350 positions although during peaks of construction up to 600 people will be working on the contract over the next 18 months.

The company also holds a contract for the manufacture of 42 jackets for the wind farm which is being executed at its facility in Ría de Ferrol. Navantia stated that this represents a major step in the consolidation of its activities in the offshore wind sector and gives continuity to the contracts already executed for Iberdrola regarding the Wikinger offshore wind farm.

The 714MW East Anglia ONE offshore wind power plant will be erected around 45km off the coast over an area of 300km2. The project's 102 Siemens direct-drive wind turbines of type SWT-7.0-154 will be installed on jacket foundations and the nacelles will be manufactured in Cuxhaven, Germany. Siemens plans to produce the corresponding wind turbine blades for the project at its new Hull facility.

Construction is estimated to start in 2018 with the installation of the foundations and full commissioning is scheduled as early as 2020. The project is expected to meet the energy demands of 500,000 British households annually.
