Nordergründe's delayed platform comes online

The offshore transformer platform for the Nordergründe offshore wind farm is now operational and can transmit energy generated by the wind farm to the German onshore grid.

Weighing in excess of 2,000t, the transformer platform was lifted onto a pre-installed monopile foundation at the wind farm by the heavy-lift crane vessel Rambiz in September 2017.

Commissioning of the project had originally been planned for the end of the year 2016, but was set back by the insolvency proceedings of the transformer platform manufacturer, BVT Bremen GmbH & Co. KG, in the fall of 2016. The insolvency proceedings meant that the construction of the transformer was put on hold.

Stahlbua Nord, part of the Ronner Group finished the steel works shilst GE/Alstom delivered the electrical equipment and Muehlhan completed the coating.

Nordergründe is located in waters with a depth of 10m within the 12-nautical mile zone of the German North Sea. It is situated approximately 15km north-east of the island of Wangerooge. Grid connection to shore was provided by transmission system operator TenneT.

The turbine installation was executed by the MPI Enterprise, which was been modified for erecting the wind turbines in the Weser estuary. The last turbine went up in December.

Financial close of the projects was completed in June of 2015 with the participation of European Investment Bank and KfW IPEX. Besides wpd, John Laing Group plc and Gothaer Insurance Group are acting as equity providers.
