Reports have surfaced that the NorNed Interconnector is currently out of action and will be for a few days. Preliminary tests show that a defect has occurred in pole one and further diagnostic work is underway.

NorNed is a 580km-long bipolar high voltage direct current cable with a capacity of 700MW. It is jointly owned by Dutch and Norwegian transmission system operators TenneT and Statnett. The connection has been in operation since 2008 and is used by both countries to import and export electricity.

Capacity and electricity on the NorNed cable are traded through an explicit auction system. Initially these auctions were jointly organised by TenneT and Statnett. Today, they are run by the APX power exchange.

The two transmission system operators are also in the process of constructing the NordLink interconnector project between Germany and Norway.  The project is valued between €1.5-2bn. In Germany, the cable will start in Wilster, northwest of Hamburg. Once completed, the bipolar high voltage direct current link will connect Norway and Germany across the North Sea.

The project will have a rated capacity of 1.4GW, a terminal voltage of 500kV and cover a total length of 624km. The project is on schedule, and commissioning is expected by the end of 2019 ahead of commercial operation in 2020.
