Prysmian Group has completed its array cable installation works at the Wikinger offshore wind farm ahead of schedule. Termination and testing works are currently in progress. Work began in 2016, when cables were produced in Prysmian’s cable manufacturing facility in Drammen, Norway.

Iberdrola Renovables Offshore Deutschland GmbH awarded Prysmian the €60m contract in 2015 to supply and install the array cables within the wind farm. Prysmian was responsible for the design, manufacture, installation, burial as well as the termination and testing of 80km of 33 kV submarine cables. The cables will connect the 70 wind turbines at the site to the offshore substation that form.

“This milestone, which is quite uncommon in the offshore wind market, highlights the Group’s capabilities in managing turnkey inter-array contracts and re-affirms the strong focus Prysmian has in the offshore wind market,”
stated Massimo Battaini SVP Energy Projects.

“We have been heavily investing in developing our project execution and cable installation capabilities. We can now count on new assets, such as our cable barge, Ulisse, for shallow water installation as well as new jetting and cable protection machines,”
added Battaini.

The €1.4bn Wikinger project spans an area of approximately 34km2. The project is on scheduled to enter full operation by the end of 2017 producing enough electricity to meet the demands of 350,000 German households.

Fred. Olsen Wind Carrier's jack-up installation vessel Brave Tern is being used to carry out the installation of the 70 turbines and was loaded out with components at the Port of Sassnitz-Mukran. This includes the 135m pre-assembled rotor.

Installation of the project's 70 four legged jacket foundations was completed on the 2nd January by Offshore Windforce, a subsidiary of Boskalis. Installation began in April 2016 and was carried out using the Taklift 4 and Giant 7 heavy lift vessels. The foundations stand in water depths between 37-43m and were manufactured by Navantia, Windar and Bladt Industries.

Prysmian has also provided turnkey HVAC cable systems for various offshore wind farms in the German North Sea, such as the links between Global Tech I and Veja Mate wind farms to the BorWin2 offshore grid connection.

Prysmian recently secured a contract for the ElecLink interconnector project as well as for three wind farms, Fécamp, Calvados and Saint Nazaire. The company also holds a contract for the supply of inter-array cables at the Rentel offshore wind farm.
