Sandbank foundations - EEW!

Vattenfall and Stadtwerke München (SWM ) give the go -ahead for the manufacturing for the components of the offshore wind farm Sandbank. To start of the constrcution of the project we will see the construction of the 72 steel monopile foundations.

The monopiles have a diameter of 6.8m and are up to 70m long. A single monopile weighs up to 886T and is composed of up to 25 individual cylindrical components , so-called " shots " , which are welded together.  The shots are rolled from flat steel plates and moulded at a pressure of 5,700T into cylinders . For the production of all 72 monopiles around 52,000T of steel are needed . With the manufacturing of the foundations for "Sandbank" production is at full capacity at EEW SPC until mid-2015 . The production of the offshore transformer station will commence soon.

Christian Vogt , Head of Investment Management SWM : " The timely start of the production work is an important step for the sandbank project. The foundation is a key trade union . With EEW we have successfully worked together in other offshore projects. We are pleased that the project sandbank is now entering construction . "

The investment on the project is currently standing at 1.2bn euros, the company Sandbank Offshore GmbH was founded purposely for the Sandbank project. Vattenfall have a 51% stake in the company and SWM hold a 49% stake.

The project will involve 72 4MW Siemens turbines with a total capacity of 288MW. Construction is set to start in 2015.
